This exhibition brings together established and emerging artists who explore the tension between humans and machines, and between reality and artifice.

Double Take is an exhibition curated by Lawrence Van Hagen, staged within a vast industrial space in the heart of Mayfair. The exhibition brings together a group of established and emerging artists that each examine and question this contemporary tension between human and the machine, and between reality and artifice.

At the core of the exhibition is the theme of perception. Many of the works included will cause viewers to question whether they are man-made or digitally manipulated, tricking the viewer into thinking they are the very opposite to their reality. This theme is more relevant than ever today given the uncompromising ability of AI to digitally generate near-perfect images.

Another pervading theme throughout this exhibition is repetition. Whether achieved through mechanical or technological intervention, or an artist fixating on the same image over and over again, the act of repetition pervades contemporary art and is symbolic of this very tension between the artist’s hand and the machine’s input.

Double Take dissects these themes of repetition, perception and artifice, to open up wider discussions about our current relation-ship with media and technology and where it might be heading next.
