Robert Ryman

b. 1930, Nashville, Tennessee, USA
d. 2019, New York, USA

Robert Ryman (b. 1930, d. 2019) was an American artist celebrated for his sensitive and rigorous exploration of white paint in its many permutations. Working with a wide range of painterly media across supports including paper, canvas, linen, aluminium, vinyl and newsprint, Ryman shifted attention away from image and representation towards the physical act of applying paint to a surface. His works foreground the visual, material and experiential qualities of painting, revealing subtle distinctions in texture, tone, scale, light and support. Executed entirely by hand, each composition carries the trace of touch while remaining carefully restrained.
