Agnes Martin
b. 1912, Macklin, Canada

Agnes Martin (b. 1912, d. 2004) was a Canadian-American artist known for her restrained abstract paintings composed of delicate grids, pale washes of colour, and finely drawn lines. Although her work is often associated with Minimalism, Martin’s practice was deeply rooted in emotion, intuition, and spiritual experience. Every line and grid was made by hand, giving her seemingly precise compositions a subtle human presence and quiet vulnerability. Through repetition, restraint, and muted tones, Martin created works that evoke stillness, clarity, and inner contemplation.
